Green Oasis Journal No. 2
04-Dec-2022
Another great day of hard work was completed by the SAPHRA Green Oasis voluntary force. The working party added more plants into the back border dug up from last time.
The working group also started an experiment of this yoghurt treatment on a couple birch tree stumps.
I didn't know about this, but RHS and Woodland trust advise that tree stumps should be removed as the stump will continue to grow rather than decompose long after the tree is cut down. However instead of calling an expensive tree surgeon, the working party decided to experiment with some natural method to decompose the tree stumps. Tree stumps do rot naturally over time, but in most cases, they take a very long time to rot away fully, like 10-15 years.
This yogurt treatment is one of many different ways of introducing some yeast and nitrogen to encourage the natural biological processes that break down wood in the first place. It's yet to be seen if and how long this method will start taking effect, but we will for sure keep an eye on its progress!
