GREEN OASIS JOURNAL NO. 9

 April Grass Re-Seeding Work Party

During the Easter weekend, SAPHRA issued a call for help from the neighbours to show up and help re-seed the lawn as the grass has gotten quite patchy in places. A nice size group congregated around the Green Oasis to carry out the efforts, very kindly organised by SAPHRA's Kathy, Angela and Roger.

Team Work

Thankfully the weather was fantastic on the day. And the group to get on with the gardening work while chatting to each other and the passers-by.
Full of communal and neighbourly vibe :)

Spotting The Honey Bees

The locally elected councillor Juliet Voisey joined the effort and helpfully provided the seeds and some plants. As an experienced bee keeper, she pointed out the honey bees buzzing around the dandelion flowers. Dandelions are great for bees although they are often considered as weeds. Based on the advice, the group decided to keep the dandelions and some other non-invasive native grown plants in the ground as they are.

Men At Work

Ron from across the road kindly brought out his lawn mower to flatten out the grass before we put the seeds into the ground.

Group Photo

After most work is done, the group had some tea and biscuits and took below group photo to mark the completion of a successful community endeavour .

The Day After...

Below photos are taken a days after.
Signs have been put up to advise people to keep off the grass, as new seeds are just sown.

Couple Weeks After...

Amazingly the grass has grown and covered the central patchy area already in only a couple weeks (below photos were taken in mid-April). The edge near the pavements are yet to be covered up by grass but the bold patch has visibly shrunk from before - look forward to see how it'll be like in a few more weeks!

Three Weeks After...

The patch edge sections are being filled up by the new grass!
