GREEN OASIS JOURNAL NO. 10
Bug Survey and Bio-Blitz
The local Green Party Councillor, Juliet Voisey, helped arranged with a colleague, Lindsay from Butterfly World 2, to carry out a bioblitz at the oasis on 15 June 2024 to find and identify as many species of plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms as possible within a two-hour period.
Unfortunately, it was a rainy day and little wildlife being spotted and it couldn't be made it into an event with family and kids activities that was originally hoped for.
Lindsay however was able to give some assessment the health of the site and suggestion planting that can improve biodiversity - giving the Green Oasis gardeners some idea of what could be useful to plant next.
SAHPRA secretary, Cathy, hope to arrange a similar activity later in the year.
Keyfield Terrace
The Keyfield Terrace guerrilla gardeners managed to transformed the bushy area opposite to the Keyfield Terrace island into a fairy tale pathway. The new path area is well hidden behind the roadside hedges and it's full of interesting flowers and plants.
It's a fantastic addition to the flowery island and it is yet another space full of beautiful flowers - what an achievement again! Congratulations guerrilla gardeners!
Flower Feature
Below photos feature Honeywort - natively Mediterranean region, grows in well-drained soil and full sunlight. It's got unusual blue leaves surrounding its flowers.
